Flags line the storefronts from Rochester to Stewartville, Byron, and Eyota, the county fair rolls into town, and free concerts fill the parks nearly every night of the week. Whether you are a lifelong neighbor or just passing through the Med City, here is your friendly guide to the best of the season. Grab a lawn chair, round up the kids, and celebrate small-town summer — most of it is free and made for families.

Stewartville Summerfest
Stewartville throws its biggest party of the year over the Fourth of July. The Grand Parade marches through town Saturday evening, followed by fireworks at dusk, plus Arts in the Park, food trucks, a kids’ parade, carnival games, and the Summerfest fun runs.

4th Fest: Rochester Celebrates America
Rochester’s official Independence Day celebration returns to Soldiers Field for America’s 250th birthday. Expect live music — including Branded Hot Country — food trucks, bounce houses, face painting, a 40-foot obstacle course, mini golf, lawn games, and free glow items, all leading up to a fireworks finale over the city.

Rochester’s oldest growers-only market fills Graham Park with about 100 vendors selling just-picked produce, flowers, meat, cheese, baked goods, and crafts — plus live local music and free community exercise classes. Rain or shine, and parking is free.

Southern Minnesota’s largest art, food, and music street festival turns downtown into a block party every Thursday. Browse 50-plus artisan booths and 50-plus food vendors, catch live music, and let the kids loose at the Mayo Clinic Family Nook.

A 30-plus-year Rochester tradition, these free Sunday-night concerts bring national, regional, and local acts to the banks of the Zumbro River. Bring a blanket and a picnic. July lineup: Vertical Horizon (7/12), Tank and The Bangas (7/19), and Mackenzie Carpenter (7/26).

True North Vacation Bible School
Christ Community Church hosts its free, high-energy Vacation Bible School with games, music, crafts, skits, and Bible lessons for kids — an easy weeknight outing for families during summer break.

Olmsted County Fair
Where city and country come together. Seven days of livestock and 4-H and FFA youth exhibits, carnival rides, fair food, free-stage entertainment, and grandstand events — with headliners Jana Kramer and Breland, plus a demolition derby and motocross.

Rochester Honkers Baseball
Catch America’s pastime under the lights at historic Mayo Field, home of the Honkers since 1994. The Northwoods League collegiate team plays home games throughout July, with food trucks before every game and live music before most — affordable, family-friendly summer fun.

Oxbow Park & Zollman Zoo
Just north of Byron, this free park along the Zumbro River is home to Zollman Zoo, where you can meet more than 30 native Minnesota animals — bison, black bears, wolves, otters, and eagles. Add miles of trails, picnic shelters, and free naturalist programs most weekends.

Quarry Hill Nature Center
A local treasure on 329 acres, with paved and dirt trails, a fishing pond, an 1882 sandstone cave, and a limestone fossil quarry. Inside, kids love the touch tables, the 1,700-gallon Minnesota fish aquarium, and the live reptiles and birds. Free to visit and run in partnership with Rochester Public Schools.

Chester Woods Park
Beat the July heat at the county’s go-to swimming beach, at the headwaters of Bear Creek near Eyota. The beach and beach house (with showers) are open all summer, plus about 15 miles of trails, a boat launch, fishing pier, picnic areas, and kayak and paddleboard rentals. Admission is free.

Rochester Public Library: Summer Playlist
The library’s free, all-ages summer reading and adventure program runs all summer — read and explore, then pick up a Summer Playlist bookbag when you finish. There is also free summer parking and a packed calendar of storytimes, magic shows, and live-animal programs for kids.

A woman-owned Rochester favorite pairing locally foraged, scratch-made food and wood-fired pizza with award-winning craft beer.
